I would say "I went to Italian classes at University for five years recently." The classes all consisted of individual lessons spread out over the five years, but I here wouldn't say "I went to Italian lessons for five years".

As I said rein #2, it depends on the intended meaning, and the context. If you provide a context, people will be able to help you. Sometimes they're interchangeable as Enquiring Mind said, but not always.
